COSEE Island Earth (IE) seeks to encourage the link between science and Hawaii’s visitor and resident population.
COSEE Island Earth’s mission is to facilitate communication and collaboration between members of the general community and ocean scientists. In an Island Archipelago like Hawaii, the ocean not only surrounds us physically but also affects our cultural, recreational, occupational, and economic environment. The pervasiveness of the ocean in every aspect of island living creates a need for ocean literacy throughout the general public, so that people are informed decision-makers concerning important matters in the marine environment. To achieve such ocean literacy, COSEE Island Earth provides a variety of avenues to promote ocean education including community events, radio shows, blogs, and classes. COSEE Island Earth seeks to encourage the link between science and the general public. The following are projects facilitated by COSEE Island Earth.
For the Public:
- "All Things Marine" COSEE Island Earth on the radio: The Hawai‘i Tomorrow radio station (am760) broadcasts monthly educational interviews with marine scientists about their research with the purpose of engaging members of the public in current ocean science endeavors. Listeners are encouraged to call in with questions!
- COSEE classes: COSEE facilitates a number of community education opportunities including:
*COSEE Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Connections:Follow our blog chronicling the research and education aboard the RAMP (Reef Assessment and Monitoring Program) cruise to the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. http://www.papahanaumokuakea.gov/education/RAMP2012.html
*Public Lectures and Events:COSEE Island Earth has sponsored monthly lecture series at Hanauma Bay and offers quarterly programs though our Hawaii Science Cafes. We also participate in numerous community events by offering hands-on activities, booths and support. Check out our calendar for more details.
