Featured Scientist: Yumi Yasutake - 05.20.2014

Occupation: Kauai Programs Outreach Coordinator, Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument

Research Methods: We do point surveys selecting sites based on region and depth (shallow, moderate, and deep sites). Once we have the sites, we dive on them and set up a measuring tape underwater, and quantify the number and type of fish.

How I got into Marine Science: I have always been interested in marine sciences and fish. Growing up in Kauai fishing and body boarding had a big effect on me. From an early age I wanted to do something related to the marine environment.

Why I love science: I like learning about the natural environment, and science is a good way to do it. Being a keen observer is what science is all about.

Advice for Young Scientists: Do not give up! Growing up on Kauai, the job opportunities in the field of marine science were very limited. I heard how hard it would be to find a job on Kauai, but I always knew that I wanted to come back. If marine science is what you are interested in, then pursue it. Do not let anyone tell you to change your field of interest or your schooling to study something that you do not really like. Your career is something you have to do for the rest of your life, so you might as well love it.
